What do you use to balance a spa or hot tub?
The same aspects that need to be tuned to perfection in a pool are also important for your hot tub or spa:
- pH
- Alkalinity
- Calcium hardness
Why is pH important in spa or hot tub?
Similar to a pool, the pH level in a spa or hot tub is critical to keeping water clear. High pH levels are commonly the cause of cloudy water, and pH levels that are too low can damage your hot tub or spa equipment.
Why is alkalinity important in a spa or hot tub?
Alkalinity is a measurement of the acid-neutralizing ability of a body of water. It has an important relationship with pH (think committed and long-term).
The proper alkalinity will help maintain the optimal pH of your tub by preventing the wide swings in pH that are more likely (especially with frequent use – and that’s the point of owning a hot tub or spa, right?).
Why is calcium hardness important in a spa or hot tub?
If you have well water, you’re likely already an expert on water hardness. Calcium hardness is a measure of how much dissolved calcium and magnesium is in your water. It’s important to hot tubs and spas because water that is too soft (too little calcium/magnesium) will cause corrosion (and expensive damage to your unit), while water that is too hard (too much calcium/magnesium) will cause scaling on surfaces.
