BioGuard, our premier chemical supplier, gives these tips on pool chemicals:

  1.  Always read the product label and follow directions carefully for the proper application, handling and storage of the compound you are using.
  2. Always wear protective equipment (safety glasses, rubber gloves, etc.) as directed on the label of the product.
  3.  Always open product containers in a well-ventilated area. Never inhale fumes or allow products to get in your eyes, nose or mouth.
  4. When pre-dissolving or diluting granular or liquid products, always fill the bucket with water first and then add chemicals. Never add water to chemicals.
  5. Always add different products to the pool or spa separately and in different areas.
  6. Never mix any product with another (granular, tablet or liquid) before adding to the pool. An uncontrolled reaction such as fuming, fire or explosion could occur.

Tips for safe storage of pool care products include the following:

  1. Always keep your water maintenance products in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.
  2. Store away from other household or garden chemicals and petroleum products such as fertilizers, motor oil, grease or paint. Mixing these common items with some pool products can cause the release of hazardous gasses, fire, or even an explosion.
  3. Always use lawn furniture, walls, plastic buckets, shovels, rakes, lumber, other inert items or empty space (at least 3 feet) as a buffer zone between your pool care products and other stored items.
  4. Never store any liquid products directly over or directly next to dry pool products; they may accidentally leak and contaminate other products.
  5. Always keep pool products away from heat and open flame.
  6. Always keep all pool care products tightly sealed in the original container.
